Q and A with Kathy
What brought you to train with Monarch Fitness Coaching? What changes have you noticed during your first year of training?
I got Covid at the start of the pandemic. At that point, everyone was saying, “If you go to the hospital, you’re never coming home again.” Additional health problems emerged at the same time. I thought “If I don’t do something, I’m going to die sooner rather than later. “
A priority for me was finding a program that would support my goals. When John, my husband, and I were looking, I quickly realized that we were never going to fit in at big places for youngsters. I came across Monarch Fitness Coaching and saw it was for older people. I was like, “Sign us up!”
How has the adjustment been from having a mostly sedentary lifestyle to having an active one?
I participated in intramural sports in college and still could do similar activities. I thought I would always feel the way I did then; however, as time marched on, I found myself performing more sedentary activities, like reading, and it was hard to get my mind around the lifestyle change. I had to give up the narrative I created about myself. I was always fine being the chubby, smart girl.
Because of my health scare, I was highly motivated to make the change. It is nice to know I can be something different. I can be healthy. I can be conscious of my well-being, and that’s not vain. It was a mindset change for me. That is what I’m most proud of.
How does The Monarch Method support your goals for the future?
When John and I retire in six years, we want to have the freedom to be able to do the things we always talked about doing. We want to go see the world.
Without Monarch, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. I look to people at Monarch Fitness Coaching, like Lois, and see the goal. Lois is 80 and traveling. Atta girl! Since joining the Monarch community, I am healthier and happier.
What advice do you have for clients just starting out or potential clients?
It’s a lifestyle, not a diet or exercise routine. You have to wrap your head around wanting to be healthy, which is particularly challenging for women who were raised to see taking care of yourself as vain. Trying to be healthy is not vain.
