“After working with Monarch on stability training, I can keep up with my four grandsons. I even play soccer with them.”
Goals: Remain mobile and independent
Age Group: 75-79
Challenges: Improving mobility following hip surgery and being able to stand on one foot.
Training Plan: Diane focuses on flexibility, strength, and stability. She trains in-person one time per week and remotely two times. Diane has workouts she completes independently on the other days
When Diane began training with Monarch Fitness Coaching, she was surprised to learn that something as small as toe mobility was the root cause of her instability and previous hip issues.
Diane’s personal training team focused on improving the passive and active range of motion in Diane’s toes. Today she can stand on one foot for over 30 seconds and participate in activities like hiking and soccer.
Q and A with Diane
How has working with Monarch Fitness Coaching helped you accomplish your goals?
I can walk, run, and even dance the Twist to make my grandsons laugh. I can walk up and down the six flights of stairs to my apartment three times a day—sometimes faster, sometimes slower. I can stand on one leg up to about 45 seconds, although not every time, and I keep trying for 60. Working with Monarch Fitness Coaching has bolstered my motivation and my confidence. My 77th birthday gift was a trip with my children and their families to Palm Springs, CA. Being able to hike rough and steep trails with them and cross shallow creeks over stepping stones was a thrill.
I had bunions by the time I was in college and had foot surgery when I was in my 30s. My feet were not very pretty by the time I was 60. I have made significant progress not only in the appearance of my feet but also in my ability to stand on one foot. Greater stability means I’m less likely to fall and allows me to run and hike. It’s the result of practice, practice, practice for many months. It means being attentive to my exercises, including exercises for my toes and practicing standing on one foot. My toes are much straighter now. Lately, I can even feel my big toes separately on the floor.

Anything else you would like to share?
I recently overheard my daughter telling someone, “My mom even runs. How many women can do that at 77 years of age?” That felt really good!
